White-rendered cottage with a slate roof and two chimney stacks, standing on a clifftop above the sea

Across Sussex

Roofing specified for where your roof actually stands

A roof on the Peacehaven clifftop and a roof in the Weald at Horsham are not doing the same job. We are a family-run Sussex roofing company that specifies for the difference — and that is why ours stay on.

Why us

Every roof gets specified for where it actually stands

On the coast, salt corrodes the fixings inside the slate hole where nobody can see them, and the south-westerly finds every edge that was bedded rather than fixed. Twenty miles north in the Weald none of that applies — there it is rainfall, tree cover and frost, and Horsham stone heavy enough to need its timbers checked first.

We survey the property rather than the postcode, and quote for what it actually needs. That cuts both ways: nobody inland gets sold a coastal specification they have no use for.

Built strong

Built to last

Quality workmanship. Honest prices. Lasting protection — on the roofs that take the worst of it.

How it works

Five steps, and no surprises in any of them

Roofing has a reputation, and most of it was earned by people who quoted over the phone and disappeared afterwards. This is how we do it instead.

The survey and the written quote are free, whether or not you go ahead. If the roof does not need the work, we will tell you that instead.

Call or send a message

Tell us what you are seeing. Half the time we can tell you on the phone whether it sounds like a morning’s repair or something bigger, and we would rather say so than book a visit you do not need.

A free look at the roof

We come out, get up where we need to, and survey it properly — including the parts you cannot see from the ground. No charge and no obligation.

An honest written quote

You get it in writing: what is wrong, what we propose to do about it, what materials we are using and why. If there is a cheaper option that will genuinely last, we will put that in front of you too.

The work, done properly

We turn up when we say, keep the site tidy, and specify for the coast rather than for the catalogue. You will know what is happening each day because we will tell you.

Left clean, and still here after

Everything cleared, gutters checked, and the offcuts taken away. If something needs a second look afterwards, you have the number of the people who did the work.

Common questions

Things people ask us before they ring

Why does a roof near the sea need a different specification?

Because the failure is usually in the fixings, not the covering. Salt carried in the air corrodes plain and galvanised nails from the inside, so a roof that looks perfectly sound gives up slate by slate as the nails rot — the trade calls it nail sickness. Add a prevailing south-westerly with a long fetch behind it and mortar-bedded ridges and verges start to work loose. Specify copper or aluminium fixings and dry-fixed edges from the start and none of that happens.

Do you charge for a quote?

No. Quotes and advice are free and come with no obligation. We would much rather tell you the roof has ten good years left in it than sell you something you do not need — on a coast this size, that is how you stay in business.

How do I know whether it needs a repair or a whole new roof?

One-off damage — a slipped slate, a lifted flashing, a cracked ridge — is a repair. When the same fault keeps appearing in different places, that is the covering as a whole telling you something, and repairing it repeatedly costs more over five years than re-covering once. Our roof health check will give you a first read, and the survey will give you the answer.

Can you work on a listed or older property?

Yes. A great deal of the stock here is Regency, Victorian or older, and much of it is in conservation areas or listed. That usually means matching natural slate, keeping the original detailing and using lead where lead was used. Tell us at the outset if the property is listed, as it may affect what you are permitted to change.

What happens if a storm damages the roof?

Call us. Do not go up to look — more people are hurt inspecting storm damage than by the storm. We will make it safe first and sort the permanent repair afterwards, and we will give you what you need in writing if you are making an insurance claim.

Which areas do you cover?

Fifteen towns across Sussex. On the coast: Brighton, Worthing, Lancing, East Preston, Saltdean, Peacehaven, Newhaven and Seaford. Under the Downs: Steyning and Storrington. Inland: Horsham, Petworth, Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath, plus Petersfield over the Hampshire border. If you are not sure whether you are in range, ring and ask.
